WEATHER: It is about 60 during the day but around freezing at night.
I recommend most of your clothing is on your body and in layers. A synthetic t-shirt, long-sleeved layer, insulated jacket/sweatshirt and a shell/outer layer. Light weight pants for night. Two extra pair of wool socks and sturdy shoes. A cap during the day and a warm hat for the night and morning. Nothing more. You need to save your pack weight for water.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: You and your Scout must be realistic about his fitness level. This is not a difficult trail, but if he struggles on a three mile hike, this is not the time to throw a pack on and go farther.
