About the Event

It's backpacking weather!

There is little snow above Payson because of temperatures in the 50s most days so we are going on a one night backpacking trip in the Superstition Mountains.

MEET at the church by 7:30, Saturday, January 16.  We will depart no later than 8am.

CARPOOL is possible by arranging rides with other families.  If you carpool, everyone in the car must wear a mask.

WHAT:  We will drive about an hour to the First Water Trailhead on the west side of the Supes.  It is just past Lost Dutchman State Park.  The last two miles are on a moderately rough dirt road, but I saw a Tesla make it, so it is not a minivan killer.  We will backpack about 4.5 miles to the junction with the Black Mesa Trail.  There is a large flat area there perfect for camping.  BUT... there is no water on this route.  It is unclear if we will have enough fuel for a fire.

GEAR:

Backpack

Sleeping bag

Tarp

Sleeping pad

Tent is optional

1.5 gallons of water (3 32 oz Nalgenes) 1 for cooking, 2 for drinking

Small stove

Sack lunch

1 dehydrated dinner, 1 dehydrated breakfast

First Aid/Survival kit

Compass

Sunscreen

WEATHER: It is about 60 during the day but around freezing at night.

I recommend most of your clothing is on your body and in layers.  A synthetic t-shirt, long-sleeved layer, insulated jacket/sweatshirt and a shell/outer layer.  Light weight pants for night. An extra pair of wool socks and sturdy shoes. A cap during the day and a warm hat for the night and morning.  Nothing more.  You need to save your pack weight for water.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: You and your Scout must be realistic about his fitness level.  This is not a difficult trail, but if he struggles on a three mile hike, this is not the time to throw a pack on and go farther.

We will get out more information this week as needed.  If you haven't gone to the website, please RSVP if you are coming.
