Thumb Butte 2023 Mountain Bike Trip

WHAT IS OUR GOAL?

This is our yearly mountain biking outing.  We will be camping in Prescott National Forest near Thumb Butte.  On Saturday, we will be driving to the location for the ride.  We are scouting multiple tracks for different experience levels.  This will be a great opportunity to experience some new trails.

WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?

FRIDAY: The site is over two hours away. We encourage you to bring dinner and/or eat before departure on Friday. Troop will meet at the Church parking lot at 6:00pm. Leave about 6:30pm and will be arriving at the campsite in the dark (which is fun and adds to the adventure).

SATURDAY:  Scouts will cook and eat breakfast and dinner in their patrols. After breakfast we will check bikes and get them ready to dive to the trail.  The trailhead is a few minutes drive from the campsite.  Depending on the group and experience, we will break into two groups to ride appropriate trails.  Plan to eat lunch on the trail.  After the ride, we will have free time and dinner.  Plan to bring your Scoutbook and work on advancements if you need things signed off at camp.  We will have a campfire after dinner.

SUNDAY:  Scouts will cook breakfast as a patrol.  Afterwards we will pack up and head home.  Scouts and adult leaders will communicate when we are expected to be back at the church for pickup.  Approximate arrival is 11:00 am.

WHAT TO BRING?

-Temperatures will be in the high 50-60s, low 20-30s. Please pack accordingly for cold weather camping.  Bring extra layers, long underwear, and a warm jacket.

-Scouts will need to bring a tent and sleeping bag. (tent with a buddy)

-Remember your Scouting 10 Essentials. (Check your Scoutbook)

-A working mountain bike and a helmet.  We will be having a meeting on November 6th to prepare for this outing.

HOW WILL WE GET THERE?

SEATS - We will need enough seats for all the Scouts. We will be traveling on gravel roads and should be fine for smaller vehicles.

GAS MONEY - All passengers not riding with their own parents need to have $20 gas money. We will check money at the parking lot. Passengers are to hand the gas money to their drivers before we leave the parking lot.

WHAT WILL WE EAT?

SCOUT MEALS - All scouts are to cook and eat as a patrol. All scouts and adults need to pack their own sack lunch for Saturday.

ADULT MEALS - Adults need to pack a sack lunch for Saturday, but the rest of the meals (breakfast, dinner, light breakfast) will be provided. Please bring $10 to cover these three meals. ***If you don't register, we might not have enough food for you. Register now!

ADDITIONAL NOTES

You and your Scout must be realistic about his fitness level. Please be mindful of your Scouts physical abilities before signing them up for this outing.
