About the Event

We are going on a one night backpacking trip in the Superstition Mountains leaving from the Dutchman’s Trailhead (aka. First Water Trailhead)

Google Map

MEET at the church by 7:30, Saturday, March 19. We will depart no later than 8am.

We should be home by about noon on Sunday.

CARPOOL is possible by arranging rides with other families. If you carpool, please pay your driver $10.

WHAT: We will drive about an hour to the trailhead on the west side of the Supes. It is just past Lost Dutchman State Park. The last two miles are on a moderately rough dirt road, but I saw a Tesla make it, so it is not a minivan killer. We will backpack about 4.5 miles to the junction with the Black Mesa Trail. There is a large flat area perfect for camping. BUT... there is no water on this route. It is unclear if we will have enough fuel for a fire, but there are rings.

GEAR:

Backpack

Sleeping bag

Tarp

Sleeping pad

Tent is optional (watch the weather)

4 32 oz Nalgenes or equivalent -  1 for cooking, 3 for drinking

Small stove

Sack lunch

1 dehydrated dinner, 1 dehydrated breakfast

First Aid/Survival kit

Compass

Sunscreen

WEATHER: It is about 70 during the day but around 30-40 at night.

I recommend most of your clothing is on your body and in layers. A synthetic t-shirt, long-sleeved layer, insulated jacket/sweatshirt and a shell/outer layer. Light weight pants for night. An extra pair of wool socks and sturdy shoes. A cap during the day and a warm hat for the night and morning. Nothing more. You need to save your pack weight for water.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: You and your Scout must be realistic about his fitness level. This is not a difficult trail, but if he struggles on a three mile hike, this is not the time to throw a pack on and go farther.

You must RSVP as soon as you can:

Because this weekend is a part of Spring Break for many of you, we know some people won’t be able to make it.  If you want to attend, please sign up ASAP so we have an idea of who wants to go.

See you soon!
