About the Event
Barnhardt Trail in the Mazatzal Wilderness
MEET at the church by 7:30am, February 19. We will depart no later than 8am.
CARPOOL is recommended to limit the number of cars near the trailhead.
WHAT: We will drive about 1:30 to the Barnhardt Trailhead on the east side of the Mazatzal Wilderness area. We plan to hike approximately 5 miles in and stay the night. We will hike out Sunday morning and head back.
Scouting 10 Essentials
1.5 gallons of water (3 32 oz Nalgenes) 1 for cooking, 2 for drinking ***We are hiking along a creek so there may be water. Checking reports***
1 dehydrated dinner, 1 dehydrated breakfast
First Aid/Survival kit
WEATHER: It is about 60 during the day but around freezing at night.
I recommend most of your clothing is on your body and in layers. A synthetic t-shirt, long-sleeved layer, insulated jacket/sweatshirt and a shell/outer layer. Light weight pants for night. Two extra pair of wool socks and sturdy shoes. A cap during the day and a warm hat for the night and morning. Nothing more. You need to save your pack weight for water.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: You and your Scout must be realistic about his fitness level. This is not a difficult trail, but if he struggles on a three mile hike, this is not the time to throw a pack on and go farther.
