Time & Location

Jul 22, 2022, 6:00 PM MST – Jul 24, 2022, 11:00 AM MST

Flagstaff, 171B Forest Rd, Flagstaff, AZ 86001, USA

About the event

We will be camping in the Coconino National forest between Flagstaff and Williams and exploring the Lava River Cave

What is our goal?

We will be hiking the Lava River Cave in its entirety, approximately 5 miles in total.  During our time camping and hiking, we will also be working on requirements needed for the road for first class.  Please review your Scouts BSA Handbook for any requirements that have outdoor items and Be Prepared to sign these off at camp.

When is the outing?

July 22nd, 6:00 PM - July 24th, 11:00 AM

We will meet at the Church parking lot at 6:00pm.  Leave about 6:30pm.  We will be arriving at the campsite in the dark (which is fun and adds to the adventure).  We will return on Sunday (usually late morning). Scouts will call to have parents meet them at the church once we’re back in cell phone range.

Where is the outing?

Campground is located on Fire Road 245 about 3 miles from highway 180.  Approximately 1.5 miles from the entrance of the cave.   google maps campground at 35.353417 N, 111.829707 W.

What do we bring?

Bring warm clothes including a jacket and boots or sturdy shoes for the cave.  The cave is very cold and rocky.

LAVA RIVER CAVE

You will need the following items to hike in the lava cave:

- Warm clothing including a jacket (temperatures in the cave can be in the 40s, even in summer).

- Boots or sturdy closed toe shoes. (not sandals or crocs)

- Helmet (bicycle helmet is fine)

- Headlamp and/or flashlight and extra flashlight

Every driver should bring at least five gallons of water

How do we get there?

SEATS - We will need enough seats for all the Scouts.  The dirt road is flat and well maintained and should be accessible for most vehicles. (no sports cars or low riding vehicles)

GAS MONEY - All passengers not riding with their own parents need to have $20 gas money. We will check money at the parking lot. Passengers are to hand the gas money to their drivers before we leave the parking lot.

What will we eat?

SCOUT MEALS - All scouts are to cook and eat as patrols for Saturday morning breakfast, Saturday dinner and a light Sunday breakfast.

All scouts and adults need to pack their own sack lunch for Saturday.

ADULT MEALS - Adults need to pack a sack lunch for Saturday, but the rest of the meals (breakfast, dinner, light breakfast) will be provided. Please bring $10 to cover these three meals.

***If you don't register, we might not have enough food for you. Register now!

Physical Requirements

You and your Scout must be realistic about his fitness level. The cave has several sections requiring you to stoop, crawl, and climb.  Please be mindful of your Scouts physical abilities before signing them up for this outing.
